Not to excuse anything but they may have had to pull a car from the train due to brake failure or something other safety issue. Of course it could have been some jackass trying to save a few euros with one less car on the train.
I wish there was a commuter train between my home town and where I work. I drive 80 kilometers per day to work which is an improvement since I bought half a duplex house much closer to work, my old commute was 160 kilometers per day.

Both times it was a different train model than usual, one that already has significantly fewer seats per car. And both times they only put in half the usual number of cars for that particular model... So I'm finding it difficult to find them excuses. I could have understood their having a bad logistical day and being one train short, if they'd announced it and maybe apologized. But no, apparently it's a recurring thing now (other people had the same treatment on other lines and at other times) and nobody got a WORD of explanation.
So no matter how you look at it the whole thing looks like a company realizing it can grab the money and then not deliver the service and get away with it, and reacting accordingly.
