Hiya, Alois directed me here. :) I'm from Australia and work closely with Australian totemic animal meanings (to the point where I'm not making a deck of specific Australian energies). Here's some information on the Letter-Winged Kite.

letter-winged kites have an energy that directly opposes rodent energy, and they do not *ever* teach lessons of intellect or 'smartness' or wit. It is quite a blunt energy, as most raptors are not the most intelligent, adaptive or creative of birds. They don't need to be. They teach us how to truly rely on what the spirit has given us, namely, our senses. If we utilise our senses effectively, we don't need to know how to adapt to new circumstances, and change is unimportant.

The letter-winged kite has been surviving off rodents (introduced) and native marsupial rats and mice for many thousands of years. It hasn't significantly changed its geological habitat, nor has it changed its hunting behaviours, nor has it included anything else in its diet. It is fairly non-adaptive. Letter-winged kite, like many raptors, teaches us the value of not changing things that do not need to change. Adaptation is useless, if it is not necessary, and this kite teaches us that it is a waste of time to spend even a small amount of effort on things that are already going well. 'if it aint broke, don't fix it,' is an adage that could be associated with some of the raptors, particularly this hawk.

The letter-winged kite is the only nocturnal Australian raptor, and has an affinity to helping us to understand and navigate our own darkness. The letter-winged kite is also loosely associated with owl energy, and related lessons connecting to seeing in the dark / navigating mystery and personal shadow / confronting unpleasant and challenging aspects of ourselves.

The letter-winged kite aids us in making the most of a situation and recognising opportunity. If we are presented with an opportunity to make a great deal of money over a short period of time, we should seize it, and not worry about what happens afterwards when that opportunity goes away. Likewise if we are being offered love / entertainment or spiritual nourishment in short intense bursts we should seize them and not feel too disappointed when they go away. The letter-winged kite is a fairly cryptic species, but it relies upon plaguing mice to boost its own population. When these plagues go down, the letter-winged kite simply dies off. This is its nature. It helps us to see that when we are not getting spiritual nourishment or any other form of nourishment, it is not a 'bad' thing, but perhaps just the way nature around is moving. The way energy is responding to us at this point in time. We should let go of a need to hang onto a constant flow of energy in a certain area of our lives, and accept that at this stage - at least - it will come in bits and pieces.

Hmm, I'm sure I have some more notes tucked away somewhere. I'll keep my eyes out.
Also, finally, it could be the Brahminy kite or White-Bellied Sea-eagle, if you haven't considered either of those. A link to the Brahminy kite is here:

The White-Bellied Sea-eagle has a significantly white underside with black tertiary feathers.

Hi Moonvoice,

Thank you very much for this long and detailed explanation! I'll admit to you, I wasn't even aware that there was such strong themes and meanings attached to each different species.

Interestingly, the general meanings attached to the letter-winged kite that you brought up are all pretty relevant to my sort of personality, in positive ways, but also in negative ways. For instance, smartness, intellect are actually pretty relevant to my daily life, seeing as I'm a brainy nerd through and through, I tend to think about things a LOT, and I've been known to fix things that already worked, where they didn't work well enough for me, or where I foresaw possible future cases where it wouldn't work anymore. Not saying that any of those is good, mind; it's just one of my excesses.

On the other hand, confronting my own clouds of darkness -- and I very much don't lack those -- is something I do often and at length.

So, the explanations you kindly gave me in your comment give me much food for thought. :) Thank you very much for taking to write all this down for me, it was very nice of you!!
